The Grapefruit-tini

This has been a week of almosts.  I saw almost all of the Oscar-nominated movies this year (eight out of nine of them!).  And I almost posted a blog with my Oscar night cocktail on time.   But hey, sometimes almost has to be good enough.

So did you watch the Academy Awards last night?  I did of course, and have a routine for Oscar day and the day after that I adhered to again this year.  It’s not much of a routine- I don’t dress up in my evening gown and practice my stroll down the red carpet.  I just warn my family hours in advance that I have control over the TV for the night (we only have one working TV- I know, what??).  Then I make sure we eat dinner and clean up long before the pre-Oscars show comes on.  And of course there has to be a special cocktail.

For the day after, I sleep in as late as I can.  Since I stay up until midnight watching the broadcast until the bitter end, I plan to NOT go to the gym (which would cause me to have to get up at 4:30AM).  I hate missing my morning spin class, but if I miss it for a good cause, and plan ahead, I’m not too terribly disappointed in myself.

Frances Rocks! In any event, since I didn’t quite get this yummy recipe to you last night, you can take your time and pick up the ingredients this week.  Then you can enjoy it while you watch the YouTube videos of any of the acceptance speeches you missed.  Frances McDormand’s was my favorite.   Check it out with a Grapefruit-tini if you like.  You’ll love this combination of sweet, sour and bubbly.  Super easy and delicious.

Oscar Night Grapefruit-tini

2 oz vodka

1 oz triple sec

2 oz fresh grapefruit juice

2-3 oz dry champagne

Combine the first three ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake vigorously.  Strain into a martini glass and top with the champagne.

This champagne-infused martini  continues my theme of festive cocktails to enjoy during Oscar night.  My husband suggested I name it after a billboard because I was going to have three of them- but if I did that, I would have been asleep before the biggest awards were announced.  Some other ideas that came up (and were discarded) were The Shape of Grapefruit and Call Me By Your Champagne.

I’ll try to do better next year.

I like the Shape of Grapefruit! Yes, watched the whole thing while cleaning and ironing, may have zoned out on some of the more obscure categories, but mostly, I watched. Yes, Frances was a wonder.

Fran, we seem to agree on the important things 🙂
