This is an election year, but you’ll be happy to know that the “Blue” I’m referring to in the title of this post has nothing to do with politics. It has to do with my mood. I’m blue because of not being able to go on my Hawaii trip, as I was hoping to do pretty much up to the last minute before the Coronavirus took over the world. Alas, we were scheduled to fly to Maui tomorrow, and we were all fervently hoping that the trip would still happen even with the daily worsening of the crisis. I started checking the number of cases in Hawaii and they kept going up. Then I read a press release from the governor of Hawaii saying that incoming visitors were going to have to self-quarantine when they entered the state, and that was the last nail in the coffin.
So instead of drinking Blue Hawaiians, Pina Coladas and Mai Tais on the balcony this weekend, I, like everyone else in the country (I hope) will be staying home and trying to limit my exposure to the outside world. Luckily we stocked up on liquor before everything closed. I know you would expect no less from me.
I have to come clean- I truly have nothing to complain about at this time of so much bad news and chaos. My family is healthy, both my husband and I are able to work from home, and compared to many people, we have been only marginally inconvenienced by this crisis. There are some very nice benefits for me as well- both of my kids are home, I have ten hours a week added to my free time due to no commute, and I have been connecting with a few old friends who I haven’t spoken to in ages. I’m trying to stay focused on the positive side of things.
No matter what your status during this unprecedented situation, most likely you are spending more time at home than ever before. And now more than ever, we all need some easy to prepare cocktails to enjoy during those long hours of binge watching Tiger King and Better Call Saul. So in honor of the vacation that was not meant to be (in 2020 at least), I give you the Blue Hawaii cocktail. This is supposedly the authentic recipe that was created at Honolulu’s Kaiser Hawaiian Village in 1957 by legendary bartender Harry Yee. There are many variations of this drink, such as the Blue Hawaiian, which has creme of coconut. If you’re not a fan of blue curacao (or you don’t have any), you can substitute triple sec. The color will obviously be different, but the taste will be the same. Enjoy and be safe everyone!
