Truth be told, I am not a huge tequila fan. As much as I love a good Margarita, tequila has never been my go-to liquor. If you’re anything like me, you might have a memory of overdoing it, and it’s likely that you associate the liquor you “overdid,” with the consequences. I recall a tequila hangover back in the late 1980s that literally (and I do mean literally) lasted a solid week. That was many many years ago and I’m sure I drank much more alcohol than I would now, and the brand of tequila I drank was probably not a good quality one. Hornitos Reposado is the only tequila I drink at home these days, and I never have more than two drinks in one night, so I can’t imagine a week-long hangover at my age. But that doesn’t mean I am not occasionally whisked back to that painful week- even when I taste a top-shelf tequila. But guess what? It’s Cinco de Mayo, and I am legally obligated to post a tequila drink recipe today!
I’m pretty sure that Cinco de Mayo is more widely celebrated in the U.S. than in Mexico. May 5th is not Mexico’s Independence Day, it’s the commemoration of the Mexican army’s victory at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Whatever, for me it’s an excuse to jump on the Mexican-themed bandwagon. Instead of a Margarita or a Frosted Cowboy, though, I am opting for a Paloma- a cocktail with simple, fresh ingredients that is easy to make and delicious! The Paloma is said to be the most popular tequila drink in Mexico (I have no idea who says this). So while everyone else is sipping their Margaritas, try something unique. The drink is a bit similar to a Margarita in that it contains tequila and lime, but it also has the tartness and fizz of grapefruit soda. I also added some triple sec to the standard recipe for some extra citrus. You should consider having no more than two or three of these or you might find yourself in the week-long hangover club, especially if you don’t use a premium tequila.
Paloma
2 oz Hornitos Reposado tequila
1/2 oz triple sec
Juice of half a lime (or more if you like)
4-5 oz grapefruit soda (I used Izze)
Pour tequila and triple sec into a glass filled with ice. Squeeze in the fresh lime juice, then top with grapefruit soda. Garnish with a wedge of grapefruit. Enjoy!
Mmmm… this sounds delish! And that sexy Cinco de Mayo pic of you? FAB!
Can’t wait to try the Paloma!
I am obviously not afraid of making a fool of myself if I published that photo!
