Anyone who’s read any of my drink recipes (Anyone…? Anyone…?) knows that I like my cocktails STRONG. And seeing as you’ve probably guessed that I was at my prime bar-hopping age in the ’80s, when a Long Island Iced Tea was one of the most popular drinks, you may wonder why I’ve never written a post on that particular cocktail. God knows I’ve consumed enough of them. Back in the day, when there was a more laissez faire attitude about drinking and driving, Long Island Iced Teas were the go-to drink for anyone (including poor students like me) who wanted a cheap buzz. Two of those suckers and fuggedaboudit- you were done. And most likely too impaired to drive.
Nowadays bartenders don’t use near the amount of alcohol in their LITs as they used to, and that’s probably a good thing. But since this blog celebrates home cocktail preparation, I figure I am okay in passing along drink recipes that really pack a punch. It’s okay to enjoy a super strong drink if you’re not going anywhere. You just maybe don’t want to enjoy it every night. But that’s a subject for a different type of blog.
I occasionally experiment with the classic Long Island recipe, since I never have Coke in the house. The basic alcohols in a Long Island (at least the way I make them) are vodka, rum, triple sec and gin. So I figure if I pour all of those into a glass and add some mixers, I have some version of the drink. Hence, my Sweet Peach Tea. I add all the aforementioned booze plus some peach vodka and a couple mixers that I think pair up nicely. Kids, don’t try this at home (but parents, feel free)
Sweet Peach Tea
1-2 oz vodka
1-2 oz peach vodka
1-2 oz white rum
1 oz triple sec
1 oz gin
2-3 oz white cranberry juice
2 oz peach nectar
Fill a tall glass with ice and add ingredients. Garnish with a peach slice and fresh lime- enjoy!
