I’m just going to put this out there. I love the Oscars. I love everything about them, from the over-the-top opening number to the announcement of Best Picture, which is usually after midnight on the East Coast. I even appreciate the middle part when they announce the awards for Best Live-Action short film, Best Documentary Feature and those other awards that aren’t so popular. (Although that portion of the show IS a good time to make a trip to the bar.)
Just because I love the Oscar ceremonies doesn’t mean I love them just for the pageantry. I thoroughly enjoy movies and the theater-going experience. I have always been a huge movie fan and if I have the choice I always prefer seeing films on the big screen. It gives me the chance to lose myself for two hours: no distractions, no dogs barking, no cell phone buzzing.
So now that you know how I feel about the movie business, you’ve probably figured out that I also need Oscar night cocktails to be exceptional. In past years I have made my (not so) world famous Sangria or popped a bottle of champagne or two. But this year I came up with something that blows those two out of the water, at least for this special evening. I remembered a drink I used to order years ago at Mi Piace, a restaurant in Old Town Pasadena, California. The drink was called Stockholm 62. I don’t know where they got that name, but after tasting it, I didn’t care, and neither will you. As I’ve done in the past, I made up my drink based on how the restaurant described it on their menu and put my own spin on it.
Yes, I call it the Red Carpet Burn. Think of it as the consolation drink for all of those nominees who don’t win that coveted statuette. They may get burned by the Academy, but I can picture them guzzling down more than one of these kick-ass concoctions at their after-Oscars parties. It’s also for the rest of us who feel we’ve been burned by the Academy, who will probably choose people we didn’t want to win. So you were rooting for Bryan Cranston to win for Best Actor and Leo took home the prize? Have another sip, everything will be alright. This cocktail will NOT burn going down, unless you plan it that way and make it extra strong.
Red Carpet Burn
2 oz vodka
1 oz Chambord
Juice of half a lime
Champagne
Pour the vodka and Chambord into a shaker filled with ice, then squeeze in the lime juice. Shake vigorously, then strain into a martini glass rimmed with sugar. Top with 2-3 ounces of dry champagne, or if you prefer a sweeter drink, use prosecco.
I recently found these lovely splits of Rondel champagne at my liquor store, and they are perfect for this drink (and only $2.99!), or for any other cocktail in which champagne is only one of the ingredients. If you’re having an Oscar party, though, you’d best buy a few full-sized bottles. Your guests will want more than one of these drinks, trust me.

just seen Spotlight the night before with my daughter, Yvonne
and found it more enjoyable than the Revenant, so we were happy! ?

Movie and fell in love with Trumbo! What a Great Actor and What a Great Movie! I’m sure you’ve seen them All!

We saw Spotlight the day of the Oscars and I was also very happy it won. I haven’t seen Trumbo but I love Bryan Cranston and it is on my list. I also still need to see Room and Brooklyn, just gotta find the time!
