The Melon Chiller
The Melon Chiller

We all have a tendency to berate ourselves from time to time, and I am no exception.  I figure if I cut myself down, I will beat someone else to the punch.  It’s a bad habit, and one I am always trying to curtail.  However, this post is not about criticism, it is about praise.  Because I may have just created the BEST cocktail ever made.  Yay me!

I got the idea when I saw a few of the ingredients listed in an old cookbook, but the original melon chiller had no alcohol in it, and that is NOT the kind of drink you people come here for!  So I played around with it and the result was nothing short of amazing (see, there I go, bragging).

It’s really not fair to the cantaloupe in this recipe to boast about my cocktail-creating abilities.  I had the foresight to freeze a couple cups of the sweet juicy melon late in the summer, and finally decided (in the dead, and I mean, DEAD of Winter) to try this warm weather drink.  It reminds me a bit of the Pink Fizzy Drink I created awhile ago, in that it’s a frozen concoction topped with champagne.  But the Melon Chiller is much lighter and has quite a different flavor (although they are both delicious!)

Here’s the recipe-
Melon Chiller
2 cups cubed cantaloupe, frozen (thaw out slightly before putting it in the blender)
juice of one large lime
1/2 ounce simple syrup
1 ounce triple sec
champagne
Combine the first five ingredients in a blender and pour evenly into three glasses (yes, you get to share this drink with your two BFFs).  Slowly top each drink with 1-2 ounces of the champagne of your choice, then mix with a spoon.
Actually this drink is really very good with or without the champagne. Even with the champagne, it’s not the kind of drink you’ll get trashed on, even if you drink all three glasses of it like I did.

So today I am patting myself on the back for coming up with the Melon Chiller, even though I did kind of borrow some of the ingredients from a cookbook recipe.  I know it’s only January, but go find yourself a ripe cantaloupe and try this cocktail.  You won’t regret it, trust me!  If you want to wait until the outside chill is gone, that’s your prerogative, but you may be missing out on one of the best cocktails EVER this Winter.
