Gross Anatomy

It’s that time of year again, folks.  I am emerging from semi-retirement at long last to bring to you a cocktail recipe that I think you will really enjoy.  And the occasion is none other than the 91st annual Academy Awards.

Actually this post came about for a completely different reason than tonight’s Oscars.  A few days ago I was prompted by my dear friend Susie to come up with a drink on the day her daughter found out she had passed the MCAT (the medical school entrance exam).  Comments were flying on Facebook between Susie, her cousin Christine and me about the need to celebrate this amazing accomplishment by my creation of a commemorative cocktail.  I came up with the name Gross Anatomy and Christine came up with what the drink would represent- the blood sweat and tears that Natalie endured to prepare for this difficult exam.  So I thought tequila and lime juice sounded good, maybe some grenadine to represent the blood, and of course we needed a salt rim to represent both the sweat and the tears.

Then by chance I went to happy hour this past week and on the menu was a drink somewhat similar to what I just described.  Only this drink included jalapeno syrup, which intrigued me.  I ordered one and it was SOOOO good.  I just knew I had to try it at home.

If you’ve read any of my drink recipes, you know I generally try to keep things simple.  So maybe having to make jalapeno syrup sounds like a lot of trouble.  I made it using the recipe at this link and it’s actually very easy.  The spicy sweet combination really adds to the flavor of this drink, and makes it worth the extra time you’ll spend making it.  And isn’t Oscar night worth a little extra effort?  I just hope I’ve given you enough time to go out and get your ingredients in time for the Red Carpet.

Here’s the recipe-
Gross Anatomy
2 ounces tequila (I like Hornitos Reposado)
Juice of one lime
Splash of grenadine

1 ounce jalapeno syrup

Salt the rim of a rocks glass, then fill it with ice. Add all the ingredients.  Garnish with a lime, a fresh slice of jalapeno, or both!

Here’s to all the winners of tonight’s show- and more importantly, here’s to Natalie and all those bright students who have worked so hard to get to where they want to be.
